on the Beaches

The southern coast of Paraíba is famous for the incredible beauty of its untouched beaches, each with its own unique charm.

Most of the route is within an environmental protection zone, the Tambaba APA, which stretches from Tabatinga beach to the Graú sandbar (located on the other side of Tambaba beach).

The colorful sandy cliffs, the unmissable viewpoints (accessible via 4x4 SUV), the mangroves, and the lush vegetation form a unique combination.

Let's start with the beaches of João Pessoa, more precisely the beaches of the southern coast of João Pessoa, continuing along the beaches of Costa do Conde, and ending with the beaches of Pitimbu on the border with Pernambuco.

Seixas Beach in João Pessoa

Easternmost point of the Americas, where the sun rises first (as 4:30 am!), this narrow beach is dominated by the Cabo Branco lighthouse situated atop the cliff. This cliff is now threatened by the action of the sea and man....

It is the first of João Pessoa's beaches, going from the southern coast of Paraíba.

Frequented by locals, it is the most hidden on the southern coast of Paraíba. It has a small mangrove swamp dotted with bars. It is one of the few beaches in João Pessoa that does not have clean water, as the river crosses the capital.

It is the last of João Pessoa's beaches, located on the border with the municipality of Conde. This side where the Gramame River meets the lagoon has a beautiful view.

Driving along the beach in a 4x4 SUV, we arrived at a unique place on the southern coast of João Pessoa, where black volcanic rocks stand out against a white limestone cliff.

Coming from the capital, it's the first of the Paraíba beaches located in Conde. You can see the access road from João Pessoa on the other side.

The bars border the lagoon, and in the background are the houses of the Tabajara Indians. The place inspires peace and tranquility.

With the lagoon (where there are jangada and kayak tours), the Gramame river mouth is suitable for families with children. When the sea allows, it's possible to reach Praia do Amor (Love Beach) by driving a 4x4 SUV along Gurugi Beach...

Praia do Amor (Beach of Love)

The most romantic of Paraíba's beaches, it's a must-see for couples because of this legend: long ago, two tribes of Indians lived in this place, the Tabajaras on one side of the rock, and the Potiguares on the other.

There wasn't a great friendship between the two tribes, until one day a young Tabajara woman fell in love with a young Potiguar man... There was a reconciliation between the two tribes under the pierced rock, hence the name Praia do Amor (Love Beach).

The pierced rock became a symbol of the passage to married life, and the promise that if a couple goes back and forth together through the hole, their union will never break. Photo stop is a must!

Carapibus Beach

Somewhat difficult to access and probably one of the least known beaches in Paraíba, it has gray corals surfacing on the water's surface, forming natural pools when the tide is low.

Tabatinga Beach

Tabatinga, in Tupi-Guarani, means white clay due to a small cliff of that color.

Forgotten by many guides, it is one of the best beaches in João Pessoa! It is extensive, with sea and river bathing, and is definitely worth a stop.

The sea side offers a beautiful view of the red cliffs of Dedo de Deus (God's Finger). The shallow, warm lagoon is great for swimming, even with small children.

Coqueirinho Beach

It is the most famous of all the beaches in Paraíba, and was chosen as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in Brazil!

On this trip to Coqueirinho beach there are two beaches, the most stunning being 'Prainha', a cove protected from the waves by a small reef. The sea, crashing forcefully against the reef, has carved small caves.

Other attractions are the 2 canyons, sculpted by the rains and very colorful (accessible via 4x4 SUV). Access is complicated in high season due to traffic jams and lack of parking.
